Kelp is the backbone to a thriving reef much like corals are in the tropics. Kelp (a group of large brown seaweeds) are an algae (not a plant). Southern Australian reefs are home to the largest diversity than anywhere else on the planet! Art work thanks to Krishna Nathwani.
The whale wisdom speaks to our senses and our spirituality. Their resilience and stamina allows them to travel vast distances to calve and feed. In Australia the humpback whales feed in their summer ground of Antarctica and head to warmer water in the winter to give birth to their young. The rare Southern Right Whale are less commonly seen but call Victorian coastal waters home, especially important for calving and feeding. Art work thanks to Krishna Nathwani.
Sharks are an important part of a healthy marine ecosystem. Globally there are >500 species of shark, with a third of them unique to southern Australia, found here and nowhere else on earth. Most we never even see! While they represent fear to many, it is important to remember that most are non-threatening to humans. Unfortunately they are one of the most endangered marine species on the planet. They have much to teach us about fear if we are brave enough to lean into this fear. Art work thanks to Krishna Nathwani.
